Celiac: The Great Food Challenge
Friday, Mar 5, 2010
I love a good food challenge. Running my own catering business, managing and operating a full-size restaurant, cafe, and bar, working on my third cookbook, and feeding a family of five, it goes without saying that I love to fight the great food fight. I am around food every day; I practically live and breathe it. It is an absolute passion of mine, which I don’t hesitate to share with my husband, Jim, and three beautiful children. In turn, my family contributes to my growth, inspiring and challenging me along the way. Well, the start of this year lacked no challenges, because just a couple months ago my daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
Three months ago, I didn’t know what Celiac was. Now it’s become mine and Sarah’s new focus. For an official description of Celiac, read here. But for an even better description of Celiac, read Sarah’s blog. There is no cure or medication for Celiac; treatment of it is based strictly on diet and lifestyle.
This is going to be a learning experience, for both me and Sarah. We’ve quickly become accustomed to packing gluten-free snacks wherever we go, and I’m already no stranger to the after-school phone calls asking for the gluten free pancake recipe. But it’s all very new to us, and I’m expecting a lot of fumbles along the way. This blog will serve to document our journey through Celiac – the diagnosis, recipe trial and errors, doctors’ visits, anecdotes, and all. I hope this blog will help me understand better what to expect and what I have learned with my baby girl, Sarah. I also hope to share with and learn from anyone who might be going through the same, has experience with Celiac, or loves a good food challenge as much as I do.
Cheers! and bring it on,
